Shaped by Challenge, Defined by Resilience: Anush's Homeschool Story

Shaped by Challenge, Defined by Resilience: Anush's Homeschool Story

Feather River student Anush’s homeschooling experience has come with challenges, but it’s her resilience that makes her stand out. As Anush works on her college applications and prepares for what’s next, she reflects on her experience and what homeschooling has meant to her.

As a high school student, Anush takes Virtual Academy classes and serves on the VA Student Leadership Team. Online learning is a regular part of her day. Her days are balanced with academic work, leadership development, and connections that reflect both her goals and her values. But her learning goes beyond just doing well in class.

In addition to her coursework, Anush takes dance and horseback riding lessons while staying actively involved in her community by tutoring younger children in Armenian. After completing her own assignments, she takes time to help her younger sister with schoolwork, extending her role as both a learner and a mentor.

Anush’s culture is an important part of who she is. She grew up attending an Armenian church, and it’s here that she developed a strong appreciation for her heritage and its history. Today, she continues that connection through Armenian dance, where she performs traditional styles and shares cultural knowledge within her community.

Anush’s path to homeschooling was shaped by a significant personal challenge. As a child, she underwent open-heart surgery and faced ongoing health complications that impacted both her daily life and her education. Later, a serious lung illness led to extended hospital stays, forcing her to step away from a traditional school environment for long periods of time.

During this time, homeschooling became a necessary shift. It provided the flexibility for Anush to continue her education at her own pace while prioritizing her recovery. Instead of trying to keep up with a rigid schedule, she was able to rebuild her routine gradually, focusing on both her health and her learning. While the transition was not immediate or easy, it created space for her to regain stability.

That experience gave her a new perspective. She gained a clearer sense of what matters most to her and a strong determination to move forward without feeling limited by past circumstances.

“It wasn’t easy at first,” she admitted. “Homeschooling did have a rocky start. The first year or so was really difficult. I wasn’t quite sure how to make connections with others since I had yet to join the Leadership class, so I was pretty lonely. But once I finally went for it, it felt like I had finally found my footing.”

Now, as she progresses through high school, Anush has taken an additional step—enrolling in dual-enrollment college courses. While the transition came with challenges, particularly the increased workload, she has adapted by strengthening her time management skills and perseverance. Balancing college classes with her busy schedule requires her to be intentional with her time. She often has to shift time away from hobbies in order to stay focused on her long-term goals.

Anush plans to become a veterinarian. Her love for animals is both a source of comfort and a driving force behind her ambitions. She recognizes the need for specialized care in this field and hopes to make a meaningful impact through her future work.

Through the VA Student Leadership Program, Anush has also become much more comfortable approaching others and planning events. What began as a way to connect has become an opportunity to build confidence, form friendships, and develop leadership skills. Her past experiences with illness and isolation have shaped her into a patient and empathetic leader—someone who understands the importance of community support.

What started as homeschooling out of necessity due to her health has become a foundation for Anush’s future—one that allows her to pursue her goals with confidence, stay connected to her values, and move forward with purpose. Homeschooling has given her the flexibility to pursue rigorous academics, stay connected to her culture, and grow into a confident, goal-driven individual.

Her story shows what’s possible with homeschooling: giving students the space to overcome challenges, discover their strengths, and move forward with purpose.
