Feather River Student Completes First 5k Race at Just 8 Years Old

How long would it take you to run 3.1 miles? When Feather River Charter School student Vereniki crossed the finish line of his first 5K race in just 36 minutes, he accomplished something many adults never attempt.

The second-grade student, who celebrated his eighth birthday on April 1, recently participated in a 5K charity run organized by the Sacramento Runners Association. The event raised funds to support infrastructure improvements for a local children's disability hospital in Sacramento.

For Vereniki, the race was about more than reaching the finish line. It was an opportunity to challenge himself while supporting a meaningful cause.

"I feel good that I get to race and help raise money," he shared.

Preparing for his first race required weeks of dedication. Vereniki trained alongside his father every morning, who has participated in marathon events throughout the San Francisco area. Running together gave him both motivation and encouragement as he worked toward his goal.

His mother describes his father as his greatest motivator throughout the training process.

Homeschooling gives him the time to really understand a subject while still keeping himself very active.

Outside of running, Vereniki enjoys an active lifestyle. He balances his academic studies with a variety of extracurricular activities, including swimming and jiu-jitsu.

"I've been doing jiu-jitsu for two years," Vereniki explained. "I like self-defense, and the breathing techniques I learned from jiu-jitsu help with running."

Science is his favorite school subject, and homeschooling allows him to pursue both his education and his many (more physical)  interests.

"Homeschooling gives him the time to really understand a subject while still keeping himself very active," his mother shared. "We are an active family."

Completing a 5K is an impressive accomplishment for anyone, but doing so as an eight-year-old participating in his very first race makes the achievement even more remarkable.

With determination, consistent training, and support from his family, Vereniki successfully crossed the finish line and made a difference in his community along the way.
