More Than Mail: How Pen Pals Spark Learning and Friendship

Sequoia Grove Charter Alliance is excited to relaunch its beloved Pen Pal Program for the 2025–26 school year! Over the past several years, this program has connected hundreds of students across 14 counties in Northern California, creating meaningful friendships and real-world learning opportunities.

The Pen Pal Program allows students to exchange monthly letters with peers of similar grade levels. Open to all students in transitional kindergarten through 12th grade, students who join can share stories, ask questions, and learn about one another’s experiences, all while practicing important literacy skills.

Benefits Beyond the Page

The Pen Pal Program offers more than writing practice. Students learn how to address and mail letters, gain confidence in their writing abilities, and discover the joy of long-distance friendship. Families have even shared that the monthly letters become keepsakes, treasured reminders of a special learning experience.

While the primary focus is on letter writing, some families also choose to connect with their pen pals in person at schoolwide park days, field trips, or events, deepening those friendships and creating memories that go beyond the mailbox.

“Pen pals Evie (Clarksville) and Clara (Lake View) got to meet in person today! They are a perfect match and can’t wait to keep writing each other and meeting up when they can.”

How It Works

  • Students are paired with a pen pal close in grade level and writing ability.

  • Within two weeks of registering, families will receive a Welcome Email with:

    • Your student’s pen pal introduction

    • Instructions for exchanging mailing addresses

    • A fun writing prompt to kick things off

  • Each month, students receive The Pen Pal Press, an email newsletter filled with writing tips, inspiration, and fun ideas for their next letter.

  • Students who stay in the program all year will earn a Pen Pal Program Pin through our Pincentive Program.

Join the Fun

Families interested in registering their student for the Pen Pal Program can register through Sequoia Sign Up. Matches will be made within 2 weeks, and a welcome letter will be emailed to parents to begin the writing journey.

Whether through letters or at a park day, the Pen Pal Program helps students build friendships, strengthen skills, and experience the joy of connecting with others.

Happy writing!
